Educational Philosophy of Toddy Pond

Children are born curious and eager to learn...

Toddy Pond School field trip.

It is a natural part of growth. At Toddy Pond School, teachers, parents, families and friends work to encourage and support that natural desire to learn in every child, every day.

Toddy Pond students master traditional academic skills in an atmosphere of discovery based on individual interests, direct experience, and children's natural inclination to play.

Students often work on group and individual projects...

  Working on a collaborative project.

...that they initiate, plan, and carry out with coaching from their teachers. Each classroom has computers that are connected to the Internet so that students can find out what they need to know to make their projects work. Parents and friends with special expertise aid the discovery process by assisting with field trips, mentoring, or guest presentations.

Everyone learns a little bit differently...

Enjoying some quiet work time.

The teachers and families at Toddy Pond recognize that fact and build on individual strengths and interests to construct a personalized learning plan with each child from kindergarten right through the eighth grade.

Students also learn personal skills...

...that will enable them to take charge of their own lives in the 21st Century. For example, students learn teamwork and respect for others' abilities and opinions. They learn how to learn, to analyze, to pose questions, to work together, to experiment, to ponder, to seek out resources, to come to solutions. They learn to take more and more responsibility for their own educations, based on their readiness to do so. They learn, in short, how to be themselves in the fullest and most fruitful way that they can.
